Red Hat Drives Hybrid Cloud Ubiquity With OpenShift Innovation Across Architectures, Applications And Infrastructure

Red Hat, Inc., the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, announced new capabilities and features for Red Hat OpenShift, the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform. From updates to OpenShift Serverless for enhanced developer efficiency to extended support across architectures, Red Hat OpenShift helps fuel enterprise innovation across the hybrid cloud backed by Red Hat’s expertise and commitment to production-ready open source.
[infobox title=’MASACHIKA SUDAVICE PRESIDENT, HEAD OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, NTT DATA CORPORATION’]With Red Hat OpenShift, which was adopted as the foundation of OpenCanvas, we are leveraging AWS and Azure, combined with on-prem services, increasing the flexibility of the IT environment of customers using OpenCanvas and have been able to increase delivery of services to our customers.[/infobox]

According to Forrester1: “Over the next five years, cloud-native technologies will herald a new era of distributed enterprise software designed to be built and run wherever a container platform is available. This will help large enterprises compete with digital natives, as the same cloud-native tech will be available to both.” Red Hat’s 2020 State of Enterprise Open Source Report further indicates the demand for hybrid cloud, with 63% of respondents claiming they have a hybrid infrastructure today while more than half of those who do not are planning a deployment within two years.

Red Hat views Kubernetes as the cornerstone of hybrid cloud computing, delivering a common platform that spans bare-metal servers, virtual environments and private and public cloud environments with familiar tools and services. Built on the trusted and proven backbone of the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat OpenShift provides a powerful, scalable Kubernetes foundation for hybrid cloud computing use cases across industries and regions.

Applications built for (hybrid) cloud-scale

Traditional application development tools and technologies can struggle to meet the demands of a cloud-native world, especially when containerized deployment models blur the lines between developers and IT operations. Red Hat OpenShift builds a developer experience aimed at accelerating cloud-native applications, now adding:

  • The latest update to OpenShift Serverless with Red Hat OpenShift Serverless 1.11, which brings full support for Knative eventing. This enables containerized applications to consume as many resources as needed at a given time, without leading to over or under consumption.
  • Red Hat build of Quarkus, a Kubernetes-native Java stack fully supported by Red Hat. With a single Red Hat OpenShift subscription, customers now have full access to Quarkus, enabling developers to repurpose mission-critical Java applications on Kubernetes, backed by Red Hat’s enterprise support and expertise.

Hybrid cloud-ready: Now and for the future

The hybrid cloud needs of organizations today may not necessarily be the same as the needs of tomorrow, especially as dynamic global conditions necessitate rapid changes in service delivery, scale and composition.

Further updates to Red Hat OpenShift 4.6 intended to help enterprises address these challenges include:

  • Powerful new edge computing features with remote worker nodes, which extend processing power to space constrained environments. This enables IT organizations to scale remotely while maintaining centralized operations and management.
  • Key capabilities for public sector Kubernetes deployments including availability on AWS GovCloud and Azure Government Cloud, extended OpenSCAP support and more.

Red Hat OpenShift also improves on its previously released OpenShift Virtualization feature set by adding informed, one-click and template-based VM creation and performance and scale optimizations targeted at VMs running Microsoft Windows-based workloads.

Further supporting OpenShift across the hybrid cloud is the Red Hat OpenShift Ansible Content Collection. Delivered as Certified Content for Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, this collection helps organizations manage and extend OpenShift using Ansible IT automation technology.

Innovation across multiple architectures and multiple clouds

Open hybrid cloud strategies do not rely on a single architecture or cloud provider; instead, these deployments often focus on bringing in the best of all worlds to support enterprise transformation. This could mean using a combination of hardware providers on-premise, leaning on multiple clouds for specific services or any combination thereof. Red Hat OpenShift is designed to support IT organizations across the open hybrid cloud, regardless of the technical makeup.

Red Hat OpenShift is supported across a broad range of traditional enterprise hardware, including x86, IBM Z, IBM LinuxONE, IBM Power Systems, and IBM Storage. Building on Red Hat’s decades long expertise in delivering production-ready solutions across multiple architectures, the addition of these new supported configurations furthers the ability for enterprises to select the best hardware mix for their hybrid cloud deployments while still retaining the power and promise of enterprise Kubernetes.

In addition to being offered as a managed or self-managed service on every major public cloud, including AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure, Red Hat OpenShift is now also available on AWS and Microsoft Azure Government Clouds, providing additional features intended for public sector cloud computing. Further extending OpenShift’s reach into the public cloud domain is Azure Red Hat OpenShift, a jointly-managed, engineered and supported offering on Microsoft Azure backed by the expertise of both Microsoft and Red Hat. A similar service is expected to launch on AWS with joint management and support from Red Hat and Amazon.

Supporting Quotes

Ashesh Badani, senior vice president, Cloud Platforms, Red Hat

“Building a hybrid cloud strategy with Kubernetes at its core requires more than just a container orchestration engine; wide-ranging enterprise transformation requires extensive application services, hardware and public cloud support and a strong ecosystem of supporting partners. Red Hat OpenShift delivers all of these features to IT organizations, from integrated developer features with Quarkus and OpenShift Serverless to supporting technology strategies from the datacenter to the network’s edge to the public cloud. True digital transformation requires a common platform to build and innovate upon, and we see that platform as OpenShift.”

Luc Choubert, director, Online Transaction Platforms, Amadeus

“In our continuous journey towards more modern technologies to better serve our customers within the travel industry, we sought a sustainable platform that could be used across multiple public clouds. Red Hat OpenShift has allowed us to deploy business critical workloads with no change on the application side in our private datacentre as well as with all well-known public cloud providers, giving us lot of flexibility in the choice of the hosting location.”

Masachika Suda, vice president, Head of Production Engineering Department, NTT DATA Corporation

“NTT DATA welcomes the launch of the latest version of Red Hat OpenShift. We built our OpenCanvas cloud service platform to drive digital transformation. We have already been using OpenShift with DENTRANS, NTT DATA’s application service provider (ASP) offering for financial institutions. Red Hat’s approach to open hybrid cloud infrastructure was important to us. With Red Hat OpenShift, which was adopted as the foundation of OpenCanvas, we are leveraging AWS and Azure, combined with on-prem services, increasing the flexibility of the IT environment of customers using OpenCanvas and have been able to increase delivery of services to our customers.”

Gwang Joong Kim, Department Manager, ICT Operations, Shinhan Bank

“We needed a platform to implement cloud-native services with robust support and security. When we considered options for our hybrid cloud infrastructure, we saw open source platforms as the key to success to deploy in AWS. Working with Red Hat, the open source leader, would help us gain core capabilities more swiftly.”
